Vintage Hand Woven Birch Bark Vase

This vintage vase has been crafted using the traditional Nordic technique of Birchcraft. Birch bark is a versatile, sustainable, moisture-resistant and antibacterial material. Thanks to these functional properties, birch bark has been used as a storage material in the Nordic countries for thousands of years. Knowledge of how to harvest birch bark, is today the preserve of just a few individuals. But, the tradition has recently seen a revival thanks to contemporary artists who are finding new ways to explore and manipulate the qualities of the material through laser cutting, pleating and origami. This very special vintage piece measures: 16cm height, 11cm wide and 11cm deep. Signed by the artist on the base.
