Handwoven Birch Bark Basket

This Beautiful basket has been crafted using the traditional Nordic technique of Birchcraft. Birch bark (Näver in Swedish) is a versatile, sustainable (if harvested properly) moisture-resistant and antibacterial material. Thanks to these functional properties, birch bark has been used as a storage material in the Nordic countries for thousands of years. Knowledge of how to harvest birch bark, is today the preserve of just a few individuals in the Nordic countries. But, the tradition has recently seen a revival thanks to contemporary artists who are finding new ways to explore and manipulate the qualities of the material through laser cutting, pleating and even origami.
